Gordon M. Crothers American Legion Post 15

Dade City, Florida

Gordon M. Crothers American Legion Post 15 has proudly served the veterans and citizens of the Dade City community for more than a century. The Post traces its origins to the earliest days of American Legion, when local World War I veterans came together to continue their service to God and Country beyond the battlefield.

Founding and Namesake

Post 15 was organized in 1919, shortly after the formation of the American Legion at the national level. The Post’s original charter application, dated June 7, 1919, was signed by 28 founding members, reflecting the strong commitment of local veterans to fellowship, patriotism, and community service.

The Post is named in honor of Gordon M. Crothers, a Dade City native and World War I servicemember who is recognized as the first local soldier to lose his life in combat. Naming the Post after Gordon M. Crothers ensured that his sacrifice—and the sacrifices of all who served—would never be forgotten by future generations.

The Post received formal national approval in November 1919, and its official charter was issued on February 19, 1920, marking the beginning of its continuous service to the community.

The Post Home

In 1927, members of Post 15 demonstrated extraordinary dedication by raising $10,000 through community fundraising efforts to construct a permanent Post home. The building was erected at its current location on Church Avenue in Dade City, where it continues to stand today.

The structure is recognized by the City of Dade City as a historic building. It retains much of its original character and configuration, including distinctive architectural features that reflect the craftsmanship and pride of its era. For nearly a century, this building has served as a gathering place for veterans, families, and community organizations.
